Fruitcake, gasoline and Denali
The year was 1978. My dad was 25 and had a full head of blond hair reaching almost to his shoulders. It was late April, and he had spent the previous month with his climbing buddies, Mike Brochu and Mark Ewing, running up icy slopes and rock walls. They were training for Mount Denali’s Cassin Ridge. At that time, no more than a handful of mountaineers had successfully completed the Alaskan route, so information was sparse. My dad and his friends had read a description of it translated from Italian and seen a couple of Bradford Washburn aerial shots, but other than that, they were on their own.
