Leaders come together to garner support for local tourism industry

LAKE PLACID — A hearty breakfast fueled a rally Wednesday to bolster support for tourism funding amid statewide slashing. The event at the newly completed Lake Placid Lodge was attended by about 60 local business owners and their associates, who were inculcated in the realities of the legislative budget process. Those in the industry want to ensure that $21 million in I Love New York tourism funding is kept level or increased. “When it comes to the legislative process, if you are not at the table, you might be on the menu,” said Daniel Murphy, president of the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association. “Tourism professionals need to take an active role in discussing important issues with their local legislators, before those issues turn into difficult situations.” Murphy said that since 90 percent of all jobs in this area are related to the tourism industry, it is vital to impress upon the Legislature the importance of maintaining tourism funding.
