Shortly after Steve Mastaitis lost the trail as he descended from Mount Marcy\'s summit, assistant forest ranger Neil Van Dyke received word that the man had disappeared.

Mastaitis, a 58-year-old attorney from Saratoga Springs, had been snowshoeing with a hiking party of three other people (see Mastaitis\' account on page 4) high on Marcy when the group spread out and Mastaitis walked off the trail into a drainage that led to Panther Gorge.

After members of Mastaitis\' hiking party realized he was missing, they alerted Van Dyke around 1:45 p.m. Van Dyke, who was less than a mile from the summit, headed to where he thought Mastaistis may have walked off.
